1987 – Present
First African American Pillar of Rensselaer
by Jacqueline FarmerI must admit, when I was asked to submit something to Rensselaer Firsts, I was a little hesitant. If anyone knows me, they will tell you I enjoy being behind the scenes, much like the Wizard of Oz, but I do enjoy seeing the outcome. I vividly recall volunteering, as I always do, for the annual Human Resources recognition dinner back in 2008 and asking my husband to join me once again. As the night progressed, you could hear conversations speculating on who would be named the next Pillar. As they approached the podium, you could hear a pin drop as everyone listened intently. As they began reading the bio detailing the qualifications for the award, along with a brief description of the person, it slowly dawned on me... It was me? Are you kidding me... How could I be the person being recognized for something I simply enjoy doing? No, it can't be. Once they called my name, tears started to fall, and I honestly don't remember much after that, but I know I thanked everyone from God to my family for shaping me into the person I am and allowing me to be shared. I am incredibly fortunate to work at Rensselaer with phenomenal coworkers and outstanding students, all of whom have become like family to me. 2008 marked the day I became the first Pillar, not only in my family (sorry, sister), but also the first African American Pillar, with many more to come!
