1971 – 1975
My first ice hockey game.
by Bob BedardComing from Miami, Florida in 1971 didn't offer much exposure to ice hockey. Everything changed when I arrived at RPI. Initially, there were discussions about getting game tickets. Students used to camp out for weeks to secure season tickets, which seemed crazy at first. However, once the season began, it all clicked. The Houston Field House was always packed, creating an incredible atmosphere with enthusiastic fans. The cheers were loud and engaging, resonating throughout the arena. The excitement in the stands matched the intensity on the ice, where players showcased remarkable skill and agility. Despite the physical nature of the games, reminiscent of gladiatorial contests, the energy was palpable. While the games were more aggressive back then, today's matches focus more on skill, which has its own appeal. After the first game, I was captivated and eager to learn to skate and play. Joining the Sigma Chi fraternity provided me with the opportunity to participate in D League intramural hockey, playing late-night games at an outdoor rink in Frear Park. Despite returning with numb toes, I cherished the experience. This passion led me to play in men's hockey leagues for years, even sharing the ice with a former Dartmouth team captain. Skating became my preferred way to exercise, relieve stress, and have fun, with my skates always ready in my car. Hockey and skating have truly enriched my life, thanks to RPI hockey!
